Keywords, What They Are and How They Help

Keywords are used to help search engines find your website.


When someone conducts a query (search) on a search engine, the words that they enter are the keywords that the search engine attempts to locate. The website that is optimized best for those specific keywords will have a higher rank when the search engine query is run. The website that is not optimized for those keywords will not rank well and may miss the opportunity for an additional client.



An Example

For instance, if you sold porcelain dolls, it would be wise to add two keywords "porcelain; dolls" into your website's HTML tags. You would also want to have the words repeated frequently in the HTML pages that you would like the search engines to return to an interested web surfer. Doing so will help your site rank higher on the search engine returns (list of websites that match the surfer's query). Additionally, suppose a doll collector is looking for porcelain dolls. Most likely they will try using a search engine, at which time they may begin a query on "porcelain dolls". If your website is thoroughly optimized, your website could be one of the top ranking sites on the query return. Perhaps this collector will visit your website and may even purchase from you. As you can see, keyword maintenance is essential to bringing in new customers to your website and ultimately your business.



URL Submission Strategy

URL submission is the promotion of your website to the search engines.


Basically, you're entering your website's URL into a search engine's "submit URL" options. It's very easy to do, albeit time consuming depending on how many search engines and directories you wish to submit to. The trick about submitting an URL, is it takes many search engines weeks or even months to index and list your website. And, if you submit your site too many times, the search engine may ban your website from their index. That's when you need URL submission tracking and someone on your side to worry about when to submit and when to refrain.

Keyword and URL tracking are necessary aspects of internet marketing. Obviously, successful online businesses monitor both, as one form of tracking without the other is not even half a solution.


Tracking keywords is critical to expanding online business. Do you know which words bring in new customers to your website? You may not now, but if you begin tracking those keywords, you will know soon, and you will be able to adjust accordingly. Essentially, maintain the words that work and change the ones that don't. Tracking search engine indexed and non-indexed URLs is also essential to growing an online business. This information is necessary to determine what, if any action is needed. You may need to resubmit your website, or you may need to wait another week or so before moving forward with resubmission. The choice is paramount and the action critical.
